GYNAECOLOGICAL ULTRASOUND
What is a gynaecological ultrasound?
A gynaecological ultrasound is a quick procedure in which a high-frequency sound wave passes through the skin to the body. The waves are reflected back once they reach an internal organ and presented on a monitor. Pelvic ultrasounds are able to give your gynaecologist a good view of the internal organs, in this case the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. Gynaecological ultrasounds are useful in diagnosing conditions related to the cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, uterus, bladder, or monitor the health and development of your baby during pregnancy.
Why is a gynaecological ultrasound necessary?
Gynaecological ultrasounds are painless scans done to check overall health of your reproductive organs or to diagnose gynaecological issues such as cancers, verify pregnancy, discover the cause of abnormal bleeding, evaluate fertility problems, check for pelvic inflammatory disease and confirm an ectopic pregnancy.
What does a gynaecological ultrasound involve?
Pelvic ultrasound scans are able to check the reproductive organs for issues and help Dr Mutanda-Musoke properly diagnose possible conditions you may have. A transabdominal ultrasound and a transvaginal ultrasounds are typically the two types of ultrasounds done to view your uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. A transabdominal ultrasound is done with a full bladder to view the internal organs, if necessary an internal transvaginal ultrasound may be needed to better view the organs. Dr Mutanda-Musoke will be able to advise which of the two scans will be needed for your specific needs. Neither of these ultrasounds should be painful and she will make sure you are well informed before, and comfortable during the scan.
